Introduction to Constructivist Art

Constructivism was an artistic and architectural philosophy that originated in Russia beginning in 1919 - it was a rejection of the idea of art as a high culture preserve for the monied and bourgeois class

The term construction art was first coined by Kasmir Malevich in reference to the work of Aleksander Rodchenko.

The movement was in favour of art as a practice for social change.

Constructivism had a great effect on modern art movements of the 20th century, influencing major trends such as Bauhaus and the De Stijl movement.

Constructivism's influence was pervasive, with major impacts upon architecture, graphic and industrial design, theatre, film, dance, fashion and even music.

Constructivism remains an influence in contemporary art and design with Constructivist motifs being appropriated by artists and designers around the world for everything from political statements and propaganda to pop culture and advertising.
